Why is China engaging in provocative naval exercises off the Australian coastline?
Because we, and our allies, do the same in the South China Sea.
There are two main reasons China is doing this now:
One, they are demonstrating their ability and willingness to reach Australia using some of the most potent military assets the Chinese navy has.
Two, it's a test to see what reaction emanates from it—not from Australia, but from the US.
Historically, it has been presumed that the US would come to Australia's aid if needed.
However, under the new Trump Administration, this certainty is no longer guaranteed.
This shift in the strategic landscape adds an additional layer to the significance of China's actions, as it may be testing not only Australia's response but also the reliability of US support in the region.
